The School of Industrial and Fine Arts (MTSIFA) is one of the academic units constituting Makerere University.  The top management of MTSIFA, includes the Dean, Deputy Dean and Heads of Department.  Below are the three Departments.

  1. Industrial Art and Design
  2. Painting and Art
  3. Sculpture and Drawing

Over 44 members of academic staff run the Bachelor of Industrial and Fine Arts Programme.  They are assisted by Administratribve and other support staff.

MTSIFA offers the following programmes Bachelor of Industrial and Fine Arts: 3 years Masters of Fine Arts – 2 years, and Ph.D – Minimum Four years.

To be admitted to a Masters Degree, a candidate must at least have a Lower Second Class undergraduate degree, or the applicant must demonstrate that he/she has sufficient professional skills and experience in a related field.

Admission Requirements

Applicants wishing to pursue undergraduate courses are admitted from the following categories:

  1. Higher School Certificate holders (Direct Entry)
  2. Diploma Holders
  3. Mature Age Scheme
  4. Occassional Students


Students who complete MTSIFA degrees can either create their own employment as free lance artists/designers or can be employed in various institutions including among others; Advertising Companies, Printing firms, Museums, Galleries, Schools as Art Teachers, foundries, media companies.
